Wayne’s Bagels (831 10 Ave SW, Calgary)

Writer's picture: P. SmithP. Smith
A quaint bagel shop that just misses the mark.

Atmosphere: 4/5 – Relatively clean & sleek but lacking in customer seating.

Price: $$$/5 – Definitely more than you would spend at a grocery store but average price for a premium bagel.

Customer Service: 3/5 – Nothing special, service speed was slow.

Location: 5/5 – Easily accessible, within walking distance to many great Calgary attractions.

Taste: 3/5 – Subpar for a Montreal style bagel

Menu: 4/5 – great selection of breakfast sandwiches but would like to see more unique bagel flavours.

Sustainability: 2/5 – Didn’t notice any efforts to be more sustainable.

Strengths – Clean in a great location

Weaknesses – Slow service, no explicit sustainable efforts, bagels are hit or miss

Good items to buy: Poppy seed bagels, Egg McBagel

Summary: 3.5/5 - What I love about Montreal style bagels is the dense sweetness that comes from boiling them in honey water. Wayne’s Bagels, quite disappointingly so, fell flat for me in that regard. Of the three bagels I got two were very stale. The shop was clean out front but not so much in the back from what I could glimpse. They have a decent selection on their menu but what I would like to see is some more unique flavors of bagels (for example: Saskatoonberry). What I found surprising was upon leaving the employee offered to recycle my bagel container that came with my sandwich. Why not advertise that they do that somewhere in the store? Unfortunately, I didn’t see the employee actually recycle it, all they did was place it beside the toaster oven. Overall, if you are only looking for a Montreal style bagel in Calgary I would recommend stopping by Wayne’s.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review and I hope it helps you!! 😊
